After Gratsia Kancanamaya and Sydney Samba entered quarterfinal in National University Debating Championship (NUDC) last 2013 in Palembang, UAJY Debate Unit Tim have again successfully secured their position on number 12 from 52 debate teams in “Indonesia Varsities English Debate” (IVED) on 10-14 January. This annual competition is held by Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana Salatiga in the form of Australian Parliamentary (3 on 3) with 8 minutes of speech without POI (point of interuption). The team consisted of Gratsia Kancanamaya (Social and Political Science 2011) Nursantia Indriarty (Social and Political Science 2011) and Yohanis Lamere (Social and Political Science 2012). In the octofinal elimination round, UAJY team had to end their journey as they were defeated by team from Institut Teknologi Bandung
A month later on 18 – 22 February, UAJY debate team participated in an international debate competition called Asian English Olympics (AEO) held annually by Universitas Bina Nusantara in the form of British Parliamentary, in which a team is consisted of only 2 speakers. UAJY team competed with teams from Hongkong, Philippine, Singapore, Malaysia, and also teams from Indonesia such as Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Binus International, etc. In the competition, UAJY sent out two teams; team A (Yohanis Lamere & Bonifasius Dian) and team B (Sekar Gandhawangi & Gratsia Kancanamaya) and Judith Chanutomo as N1-Adjudictor.
After going through 6 pre-elimination rounds, Sekar Gandhawangi (Architecture 2013) and Gratsia Kancanamaya (Social and Political Science 2011) successfully secured their position on number 16 from 72 teams. In the quarterfinal, UAJY had to end their journey in number 16 after meeting National University Singapore (NUS) and International Islamic University (IIUM) team C. However, this achievement is enough to make the Alma meter proud.
The upcoming competition is Asian British Parliamentary which will be held in October in Malaysia and World University Debating Championship will be held in the beginning of 2015 at Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia. Whereas national level debate competition that are held annually are JOVED (Java Overland Varsities English Debate), National Newbie Debating Competition (NNDC), National University Debating Championship (NUDC) and many more.
