Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY) periodically organizes Job Fair twice a year. The Job Fair held on 7-8 March was the second time in the academic year of 2013/2014 and was supported by 32 companies. This number significantly increased comparing to last year’s 27 companies. As to the number of jobseekers, last year’s Job Fair was attended by more than 1500 jobseekers. With an increasing number of participating companies, it is hoped that the number of jobseeker will also increase. Although this event is meant particularly for UAJY alumni, there were also many jobseekers from different universities. This phenomenon shows that UAJY Job Fair is as interesting as other job fairs.
The event is commenced by singing Himne Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta and continued with opening speech by Head of Committee. In his speech, the Head of Committe Ig. Ambeg Wibowo said that information about this Job Fair was spread through posters, banner, radio ads and website to various education institutions in hoping to gather more visitors.
Among 32 national and international companies are PT. Anugerah Sentosa Agung, PT. Griya Mie Sejati (Bakmi GM), Teh Tong Tji, PT. Kontak Perkasa, Wings, PT. Sumber Alfara Trijaya, PT. Victory International Futures, PT. Pura Barutama, PT. Asuransi Sinar Mas, PT. Graha Kerindo Utama, PT. Erela, PT. Mara Advertising, PT Gracia Trimitra Manunggal, and many other companies.
The next sequence of the event was inauguration by rector of UAJY. In his opening speech, the rector of UAJY, Dr. R. Maryatmo, MA., emphasized on the consequences when a country becomes a part of international trade. One of them is the upsurge of import products that might cause local product to be less favorable. This would cause the collapse of local market and result in unemployment and bankruptcy of national industry.
Behind the challenges faced by universities in Indonesia, there are always advantages that we can gain from ASEAN Free Trade Community. For example, universities in Indonesia will be pushed to be more competitive to create skilled human resource. Collaboration between companies and universities will also bring benefits for each other and to form synergy to improve each institution’s capability.
“UAJY Job Fair has certainly contributed in creating opportunities for jobseekers, but of course, our efforts wouldn’t be maximal without the participation of stakeholders and companies, “he said.
